Varsity Basketball Season Preview

The Men’s Varsity basketball team is predicted to be a powerhouse in the PVAC this season. The roster consists of 14 players, including exciting new additions and seasoned veterans. The team is looking forward to taking on new out of conference opponents this year, in addition to traveling to North Carolina Friends School for the annual Winter Friends Tournament.

The Varsity Basketball program at SSFS hasn’t dominated conference play since the 1990’s. The team hopes to change that this season. The Varsity squad had an admirable record of 12-13 last year but hope to elevate their performance greatly in the coming months.

The team graduated four seniors last year: Manny Rodriguez who was an energetic and defensively based guard, Grayson Slover who led the team in the amount of points scored, and Natural Dennis who was notorious for attacking the basket and missing free throws. The team also graduated Patrick Friday; he did not play as often as the other seniors, but he was loved by everyone.

The team has gained four new transfers this season: Milos Apic, Michael Young, Mikey Parker and Edward Adigun. Milos Apic, also known as White KD, is the team’s new center. He can shoot from well beyond the three-point arc, dunk with ease, and defend the rim. Michael Young has a knockdown midrange jump shot and is a lockdown defender. Mikey Parker, Coach Parker’s son, comes to us from Takoma Academy and we look forward to watching him bury 3’s from deep (far away) and use his athleticism to attack the basket. The final addition to the team this year is Edward Adigun, Raymond’s brother. He is very passionate and will fit in with the group very well. The team will look to senior captains Theo Portee and Jack Neville for leadership this season.

Men’s Varsity Basketball has a tough out of conference season ahead of them: the team has never competed against public schools before. Coach Parker chose to change that this year by scheduling preseason games where the boys competed against Laurel High School and Sherwood High School. In addition to a competitive preseason, the boys will participate in the St. Andrews Holiday Tournament, The St. Albums Tournament, and the Friends Invitational Winter Tournament in North Carolina. The boys look forward to a full and competitive schedule this season.
