Warring Weather

Jordi Martinez

A layer of fog creeps in
slowly settling in unison
Like an army
marching in formation.

The rain slaps down
on the cold
hard cement.
Murky puddles form,
raindrops shining
on blades of grass.
I can see my breath
like clouds on
a bright morning.

Earthworms peek
their heads out
through clumps of dirt
exploring the fresh air.
As humans run inside
trying to find cover,
other life emerges.
Slugs slither and slide
leaving their mark behind
snails move slowly
like tanks
trudging along.
Hordes of slugs lay lifeless
Squashed casualties.

Lightning strikes
an explosion of purple,
yellow, and blue
descending from the sky.
The cannon of thunder follows
invisible but still noticed.

The rain halts
The clouds part

Critters and creatures crawl quickly
Back to their homes
Humans emerge
And everything is peaceful again.
