Share Laughter

Serena Faruqee

Debates and newscasts are just on TV

Ringing true with those far away from me

So while there are those who believe the scares,

Shouting, “Bomb them all!” from their arm chairs

I build a bubble to keep it all out

Knowing hatred’s easy to do without.

When fear is hidden behind a screen

I can twist the words to change what they mean

Maybe, their whole life, they only met whites

Or their speech didn’t get any rewrites

You can make up a million excuses

For their words, Carson’s, Trump’s, and Cruz’s

But you? Now you’re a different story

Claiming that you’re preaching love and glory

How can you speak with the same bigotry?

Say you hate the, while I know you’ve met me

I can’t give you the same pass I give them

For you, it’s not unknown what you condemn

Even one of us should be sufficient

To make your views just a little different

When we met, you looked to my smile and eyes

Not my skin color, so reject the lies

We are human first, religious after

So instead of spiteful words, share laughter.
