Gaze

June Tian

For one of my friends Amy, and her grandma

A cloud floats on the sky,

while a tree stands on the ground,

whose twig is waving to the cloud.

In silence,

They are gazing at each other.

A puppy grooms next to a water vat,

while a fish swims in the water,

whose tail is waving to the puppy.

In silence,

They are gazing at each other.

I sit in the backyard,

You’re shining among the stars,

fading but warm.

I’m gazing at you, waving my hands,

“Is that you, grandma?”
