A Wink of Time

Riley Hinton, Guest Writer

The extent of the horizon was far too incomprehensible for her purview; she began to feel dizzy as she strained her eyes to see its end. This confusion felt more like a tragedy to her, as she knew no amount of luck would let a single soul peer to the edge of the blurred silvery line above the ocean. She wondered if it was created to obfuscate the sense of being grounded to the Earth, as it never began or stopped. Sure, it comes back around to the same spot, but it’s infinite in the same way. She was rather sanguine, however, even with the headache of disbelief forming. And it wasn’t like she believed in a higher power, but then again, why was she there? What exceptionally rare sequence of events had to happen for her to be granted a slice of life on Earth? If there was a fate, why did it let the murderer live a full life but an innocent baby only a few moments of breath? These polarized thoughts began a melee in her mind as she attempted to break them apart and see clearly. She picked up a small stone from the sand and threw it in a wide arch out into the water. Although it made her lachrymose to see it disappear into the sea, she took solace in the fact that it had its presence with her for a wink of time.

“This was originally a creative writing piece that I submitted for my English class, but I felt that it had a deeper meaning to me as it connects to a lot of the philosophical questions that I often ponder. I’m glad I am able to share it with others!”
