International Opinion of Trump

One of the most infamous people to ever run for president in the United States, Donald Trump, terrifies much of the U.S. with his politics. But, what is the rest of the world’s opinion of the billionaire front runner?

According to cnn.com, only 9% of Europeans during the Pew research center poll actually thought positively of Trump. Most domestic and international celebrities fear the thought of Donald Trump having the great power that comes with being president of the United States. In an interview with news.com.au, actor Will Smith stated, “For a man to be able to publicly refer to a woman as a fat pig, that makes me teary”.

If there is one international icon who surprised everyone, it was Vladimir Putin. As Putin and many others know, the president of the U.S. has access to the military’s nuclear arsenal. Putin had made a claim that Donald is “A really brilliant and talented person, without any doubt”. The likely reasoning behind Putin’s claim is that he wants to be the last person to be disliked by Trump. The odds of Donald becoming president have been against the Democratic Party’s favor. Putin made this announcement to avoid hatred by the very biased republican nominee and to influence his decisions when/if he becomes president.

Why would Putin want to influence the future U.S. president anyway? The answer lies back into the existence of the United States’s nuclear arsenal and our existence. If Russia wanted to unleash a large nuclear attack on a certain area suspected of holding ISIS fugitives, they would look to Trump to press the button and launch the attack. Russia would not be the one to launch nuclear missiles in a populated area because the United States would send the nuclear warheads. Russia could have their goals of terminating ISIS achieved without facing direct public backlash from the rest of the world.

As Sandy Spring Friends School is a generally democratic setting for people to communicate in, it gave our interviewer, Noah Brown, a chance to ask multiple random students one question: “If you were from another country and you heard that Trump was to become president of the United States of America, how would you react?” One student told us, “Even dating back to the 90’s and 80’s, he’s done some pretty messed up stuff. So if I had known his history and track record, I would be concerned for this country”. Another student even stated that he would “Stay away from America” and “make sure not to travel there anytime soon”.
